Stomach Bug – All you need to know about it!

Stomach bug is an infectious disease that is also known as stomach flu, gastric flu, gastro, stomach virus or gastroenteritis.

The first thing you need to know is that stomach flu is actually not related to that flu for which we are advised to receive a vaccine each year. Those flu vaccines are for influenza, and there are no vaccines for the stomach flu.

However, like I said, gastroenteritis is an infectious disease that is caused most of the times by viruses. It can also be caused by parasites, bacteria and toxins.

Viruses are the primary cause of stomach flu, especially rotavirus, but also the bacteria E. coli and Campylobacter. However, this disease can be caused by many other infectious agents.

The stomach virus is a mild virus that affects your stomach and the small intestine causing inflammation and irritation in those areas. And because they’re sore and inflamed, it’s quite hard to keeping anything down.

Stomach Flu Fighter

Usually brief in nature, in most cases it lasts one to three days.  After this period, the patient starts to recover, and that’s why stomach flu is also called 24 hours flu. During the infection, the person usually suffers from severe stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea, many times causing dehydration and weakness.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you get severely dehydrated, you’re losing vital electrolytes like sodium and other minerals. In this case, it’s best to go to the hospital for re-hydration, as this is the primary treatment for gastric flu.

The signs and symptoms of the stomach bug can start suddenly, or they can develop over a period of hours. Other possible symptoms include nausea, muscle pains, low grade fever and chills, headaches and loss of appetite.

If you’re wondering if the stomach flu is contagious, the definitive answer is yes! This disease easily spreads through contact with an infected person (like shaking hands or kissing), because the body fluids of that person contain the virus. And sometimes these people may have the virus even if they currently have no symptoms whatsoever!

We can also catch the virus if we share drinks, food or eating tools. If you think about it, it’s very easy to get the virus, because there’s lots of transmission opportunities each and every day.

So, you can say that stomach bug is a disease that occurs and spreads easily especially where people are not conscious about their personal hygiene. And that includes developed countries too!

The best way to prevent the flu is to wash your hand often! The stomach virus could be anywhere, so keep your hands clean all the time!

In the United Stated gastroenteritis usually occurs during winter, but it can happen anytime, especially in crowded places like nursing homes, schools, day care centers, camps, and so on.

And because it can have serious side effects, particularly in infants, children and the elderly, I’m sure you’re wondering: can the stomach bug be avoided? Yes and no. If you have a strong immune system, the virus might not get to you!

To boost your immune system, eat as many fresh fruits and veggies as possible and also consume garlic and vitamin C, even in supplement form. These can really help you battle with the stomach virus.

And if it still catches you, just monitor your symptoms carefully and don’t avoid seeking medical attention if they’re getting worse.

Come back often, as we will soon add more articles about stomach bug.

I am currently suffering with a stomach bug for the first time in my life. I’m 29 and found this article very useful, thank you. I think I’ll stay at home today, as I feel horrible!

  2. Alice says:

I was down 2 days in bed, up the 3rd day. Drinking lots of water and I think I got it from my friend, who had it a day earlier than me. Thanks for your input, it is exactly like you say.

  3. Tamika says:

Very informative! My symptoms started on Wednesday night. I was in bed all day Thursday, thought I felt better on Friday, so I went to work. Negative!!! Worked a few hours Saturday (in the meantime, my boyfriend gets it) has been down since then! Looks like the 24 hours is lasting longer for me.

I don’t know man, but this weekend I could have been a founde fountain had I stood on my head, and I am not lactose intolerant. I believe their may be a stomach virus going around that causes you to be able to shite over a six foot fence. Good luck, and hold tight to the Pep-to. Oh and don’t get too far from the toilet.

  4. Lacey says:

Got it today. Fine this morning and then was at work and all of a sudden my stomach started killing me and I felt nauseous and needed to use the bathroom. I work at a gas station which stinks when I’m sick because I can’t just close down, I have to put a sign up and go to the bathroom and hope no customers come while I’m in there. Told manager I needed to go home and just got home a couple minutes ago. Going to just relax and hope I feel better

    • StomachBug says:

Lacey, I hope you’ll feel better soon. But please tell us what you’re doing to feel better, if you’re doing anything special. Some people reported good results using the Stomach Flu Fighter product. You can find more details at the treatment page.

  5. Racheal says:

I came home today around noon from work. But I noticed while in the shower at 5 am. I felt like I needed to vomit. I tossed it up to low blood sugar and no coffee yet. I do remember being very gassy last night and my stomach was making lots of noises. So much that my 10 yr old commented. If I had to retrace everything, I would say the gas, and loud gurgling was the onset of the bug. I’m rushing to the bathroom about every hour. Lots of green bile is coming out. I’ve tried eating but it only stays in for about 30 min. I’m drinking extra water. My daughter just came in the room telling me her belly was making the same noises mine was yesterday. I predict tomorrow she will be where I am today. 🙁

  6. Khillian says:

I got the stomach bug on Saturday. Felt completely fine the day before, woke up around noon and was feeling nauseous. I thought at first it was because I’d eaten a lot of cheese but the bug had been going around my family for the last two weeks. I ended up spending all of Saturday throwing up. Had a terrible headache I couldn’t even keep down water, even though all I was doing was sipping it. Anti-nausea pills weren’t very effective either, though they were for others in my family. Sunday, I haven’t so much as gagged. Headache went away with a caffeine pill and some powerrade. Still haven’t eaten much but I feel better.

  7. Roisin says:

Been sick for 24 hours now. It’s my first stomach in years. My cousin had it Saturday night, and my symptoms started Sunday evening as soon as I had dinner. Spent all night vomiting and had diarrhea as well. Been sick once today, then there was nothing left to puke up! Still feel like crap now, just over 24 hours have passed.

  8. Joshua Kerrigan says:

This is a great post, I think you should turn it into a 2 or 3 part series.

  9. Jim says:

I started getting a bloated feeling in my stomach on Sunday night which I put down to indigestion. Later during the night I had to rush to the loo with diarrhoea. This happened a further 4 times during the night, the last time I also vomited quite spectacularly. I’ve been feeling rubbish since then; stomach pains, light headed/headaches, tiredness, and although I felt a big better yesterday, I had diarrhoea again last night/this morning. So much for 24 hours!

  10. Elaine garland says:

I too have this horrible bug. Mine has lasted nearly 10 days !!! One day I feel fine …the next I want to vomit. My appetite comes and goes and I feel hot and cold and tired ! I am really trying to be careful what to eat….One thing I have taken which seems to work is pepto bismol and 2 paracetamol. Good luck everyone!

  11. Howie says:

Felt great yesterday then noticed my stool coming out in straight liquid form. Didn’t think much of it until my wife commented on hearing my stomach gurgling. Then bathroom every hour. Woke up in middle of night with chills, shaking, fever and headache. Sheets were soaked with sweat and I was basically in the fetal position for three hours wishing I would die. Called in sick to work at 5am. It’s 8 now and I feel better. Still weak and still have headache though.

  12. Sanne says:

Thank you so much for this post. A stomach bug is exactly what i have at the moment. I just threw up 8 times and i feel terrible. And yes i also have diarrhea. I was fine earlier today but before my dad came home, the pain all started. Hope i’m well as soon as possible.

  13. David says:

Recovering from myfirst stomach bug. Here’s my experience.

    Thursday –

2:00 pm. Started feeling queasy, dirreah starts.
3:30 pm Vommiting, headache cold chills
These symptoms continued until the late evening. Bad body aches. Fever started. 99.7. Tried to take Imodium and drink water/gingerale but couldn’t keep it down.
Kept throwing up until I was dry heaving.

Spent almost all day in bed. Dirreah is less frequent and I only threw up once at noon. Bad headache and body aches. Feel better now that I can drink. Ate some crackers and some warm chicken bullion broth. Seemed to keep me feel better.

This has been nasty, hoping to shake it soon. I think I’m going to try to eat some food today.

Then my 9 month old son.
Now my 9 year old daughter has it.
She’s got it worse than the rest of us though.
We are just staying locked up and away from the world. We don’t want to get anyone else sick.

  15. MarcCCTx says:

I thought it was food poisoning. I felt so bad, I called the paramedics. Temperature 96 degrees. They tell me its the stomach bug and they’ve had dozens of cases. Didn’t go to the hospital though. After I threw up six or seven times and diarhea 4 time I am feeling better, but I’m going to take it easy today, and maybe call in sick tomorrow.

36 hours into a bug and I am still feeling terrible. I have had this bug before but never so much intestinal pain. Seems like I have a head start on my new year’s diet. No interest in food yet butt forcing myself to drink water.

  23. BIGG ROBB says:

Just got Saturday night after dinner, (it’s Monday morning) I thought it was the food. I’m feeling a little better now BUT I’m sure I got another day or two to go. No vomiting but I was very weak, no appetite, diarrhea, and this morning the worst smelling diarrhea possible. I was so weak yesterday that it was dificult to get up to get a glass of water. I was cold all day yesterday, and last night I was sweating.

I hope I get better soon.

  24. Koketso says:

After reading the article, i think i have the problem. I never slept last night, i thought i was going to die due to the stomach pains i was experiencing. Early in the morning i thought i am much better and i went to work. I can see that i was lying to myself as now i really feel that i am not okay. I think i have to leave now and go to the doctor, i am really sick. I have no appetite and i feel tired at my back. This is really not a good experience!

  25. Alyssa says:

I think the government is spraying everything down with the virus. Its so much worse this year than in past years and they keep telling everyone to go get the shot. I took my son to get it and he still got sick like a month after he got it. Lovely government system we have here.

  26. maria says:

Got it last Weds hit out of no ware threw up very bad diareaha a week later still feel awful…

  27. Corey says:

Hit me last night like a brick through a stained glass window. I had to miss work, and I think I’ve sanitized my body of all forms of hydration by now. -_-

  28. Julia says:

Woke up this morning feeling awful, spent a good two hours on the toilet this morning with alternating diarrhea and clear vomit. Lying down for an hour or so helped, only had to make a few diarrhea trips so far. No more vomiting. Anti-nausea tablets helped as well as sipping gingerale and water and nibbling on a few crackers. Hope to be better tomorrow!

  29. Lily says:

My almost 5year old son started with stinky gas, then he farted and accidently pooped on himself on Saturday night. Sunday morning he started having really bad stomach pain and diarrhea. We went to walmart we were in there for about 30 minutes and he had to go to the bathroom at least 4x. When we got home he kept going to the bathroom he started running a fever he started throwing up and of course he wasn’t hungry. He was really thirsty only so I made sure to keep him hydrated. Well all day Sunday he was screaming in pain that his stomach was hurting so Monday took him to see his doctor she recommended that it was just a stomach bug but she hadn’t seen someone come in with that much pain but she recommended if he was still in pain to take him to the hospital which that night he was still screaming in pain so I did. They did bloodwork,& ultrasound and couldn’t find anything. They gave him Tylenol with codeine for the pain but he was still in pain screaming there help me please!! My son is very hyper active and he tolerates pain so I knew he was very sick from the beginning. Well Wednesday came by and still nothing he was still screaming all day and night not eating anything or even coming out of the room. So I decided to take him to children’s hospital. They started an IV on him right away they did bloodwork again, an ultra sound and a ct scan this time they thought it could be his appendix they gave him morphine for the pain. But the results came back and they couldn’t find anything. Today is Friday night 9:50pm and he is still having Diarrhea, fever, vometting, he’s still not eating he’s lost weight. It’s been almost 6 days already idk if its the stomach bug (that’s what the doctors told me) but I just don’t know what to do anymore=\ my son is in so much pain. If anyone has anything that can help any remedies please let me know thank you

    • Shelly says:

I went through the same thing. The cramping in my stomach lasted about five days= it was horrible and I’ve had 4 children. after the cramping stopped my tummy was very very tender for a few days and on about the 8th or 9th day I woke up feeling as though I had been kicked in my kidney.I was frightened enough to go to the hospital myself. Keep your child well hydrated, I really didn’t start feeling better until 3 weeks in when I returned to the E.R and received IV fluids.

  30. Tyrone says:

Yo I have explosive diarrhea and my tummy feels like there be ninjas in there kickin my intestines!

    • Joe says:

I hear ya man, I have the same thing and it sucks worse than the day after binge drinking and late night taco bell.

      • Guy says:

Yeah, I feel hung over with bad gas, heartburn, and a full belly. I don’t know where or how I hit my head because I didn’t and was not drinking last night.

  31. Sierra says:

I’m having such a hard time today. I feel like garbage. All the symptoms listed above. My husband is gonna bring me some pedialyte when he gets off work. Hope it helps some.

  32. Cassie says:

Woke up around 7:00 this morning with the most exxcuriatting pains. My stomach felt like I had hammers banging around in there, took of my sweatpants thinking that is what caused it. But no, my stomach still had tons of pressure on it an around 1:00, I threw up last nights dinner and snacks. At first I thought I had food poisoning but later found out when I went to the movies with my boyfriend that it was much worker than I had really thought. My stomach bug tricked me and boy did I suffer the movies. Body aches all over and a very upset stomach. I threw up all of my slushie, 🙂 at least it didn’t stink. Or leave my breath nasty. But finally, after 3 trips to the bathroom the movie was over… Now on my way leaving to eat, I couldn’t hold down whatever it was inside of me, and I thought I had cleared out. Nope :/ trash can understands what I’m talking about.. So does the couple behind me 😛 anyway now I’m and not eating out at a fancy restaurant with my boyfriend or his parents, while I lay in bed with a aching body to tell you that we’re all gonna die from a zombie apocalypse…

  33. Guy says:

After reading this article and post, I can say it seems like I have this stomach flu though I am only in its beginning stages.

Day one: I had a severe headache it felt like a tension headache nothing really helped with the headache and it seemed it was all over the external surface of my head. I thought I had slept on my head wrong. I was very gassy, had heartburn.I was burping quite often.

Day Two: Head ache felt better though not completely better and I thought the headache was almost gone. I felt dehydrated a bit had in this order around noon; milk, vitamin d, Oreo’s, 2 cups coffee, 1 -16oz water and a sandwich. This sort of eating activity is normal for me. I did not feel like eating the remainder of the day. I still felt full at 3PM and my stomach was swollen to my and by nighttime i still felt like I had just eaten. From 5 PM to 8:30 PM heartburn was worst. A 16 oz glass of cold water seemed to help ease the Stomach inflammation and ease the pain a bit. Looked into this bug based on what I read, figured the best thing to do was get some sleep while able to. Went to sleep, slept fine.

Day three: Headaches still persist stomach still bloated and feels like my intestines may be swollen a bit too. Still have no appetite and am making coffee, I will drink a 16 oz cup of coffee and have a 16oz water. I will also enjoy 1 cup of milk with my daily dose of vitamin D. I will take some digestive enzymes to see if they help. I am considering taking 1000 mg of vitamin C in powder form to boost my immunity around 5PM if I do not show any signs of improvement.

    • Guy says:

Day Three Continued:Around 5 pm i was feeling B it better and stomach still bloated intestines still feeling swelled but gas levels had decreased and stomach was not in as much pain. i decided not to take vitamin c and instead drank 44 ounces of water over a period for about 1 hr around 7 pm i started to feel hungry and ate a few snacks one sugary the other not so much got a little gassy after my snacks. After 11pm I force fed myself a meal, one I would normally enjoy immensely, but was not able to complete it. I ate about half what I would normally would have eaten. The food was upsetting my stomach and I was in much pain. I think this is because of the spicy nature of the food I was eating. I went to sleep shortly after my meal.

Day 4: I am feeling much better stomach is still swollen but intestines feel much better and headaches are feeling much better though they still persist. I am hoping I am recovering, only time will tell. I am regaining an appetite but still have a constantly just eaten feeling in my belly and am still a bit gassy. I believe eating is good and fluids are good for helping get over this. I find it very important to stay hydrated. When I eat I feel like I am pushing things along in my digestive track. I have yet to experience diarrhea, so i am beginning to suspect I may have something else though things have not completely played out yet so its hard to say. I did feel like throwing up many times thus far, but I have yet to actually vomit. I did come close to vomiting as in I could feel it in my throat 3 times. the only piece of the puzzle missing seem to be diarrhea at this time. 2:56 pm day 4

  34. Martez says:

I think my son brought it home from daycare now everybody in the house has it. My wife went to the ER because she was pregnant and had the bug so they gave her a shot and some fluids and she felt better.. As soon as I was taking her back home that’s when I felt the effects now I am at the hospital waiting for a doctor two trips to the ER what a day….

  35. Bob says:

Started feeling like crap yesterday (Sunday). Minor stomach pain and very tired, no energy. Went to bed and actually sharted myself three times during the night. Woke up Monday, bad diaheria all day, no energy and tired, low grade fever, not fun. Started feeling slightly better this evening, ate some dinner, and just puked it all up. Going to bed, hoping I feel better tomorrow. Hoping my wife and almost one year old dont catch it!

    • Holly says:

If you can isolate yourself to one room and one bathroom, it will minimize your families’ chances of contracting the bug, especially since any type of physical contact can spread the virus.

  36. Holly says:

Day 1: I started feeling off this morning. Woke up with an upset stomach and immediately was sick. My symptoms include stomach pains, lower back pain, chills, low grade fever, vomiting, and a major headache. I’ve tried eating crackers, as well as drinking flat ginger ale and lots of water but nothing stays down longer than an hour. Thankfully I’ve had no sign of diahrea, but I have been getting sick everytime I eat anything.

UPDATE: Gatorade managed to stay down so far. Saltines stay down too, but it’s hard to have an appetite after spending the whole day by the toilet..

  37. Micko says:

THank you everyone who posted on this site.

  38. Jennifer says:

My daughter got it on Thursday and went from throwing up to diarrhea and at 8 when she would get sick she couldn’t control her bowels. She didn’t eat until Sunday. We kept her hydrated. Saturday night I got it and threw up and spent all day Sunday in bed with stomach pain and diarrhea. I drank water and thought that would make me sick so I went to ice chips for a while and that helped. Finally did G2 and worked on that today, Monday. I can eat crackers, but it sends me to the potty pretty quick. So I stay with the G2 and hope this runs its course quickly. Definitely don’t stray far from the bathroom.

  39. Samantha says:

I just got over this awful disease… It started Wednesday night after eating dinner. I felt pretty gassy earlier in the day, but figured I just needed to eat. Well, almost as soon as I finished dinner I was on the toilet. Couple minutes later I was puking and pooping simultaneously. (Yea, skills :-\) I was running to the toilet every 5 minutes & every 30 minutes overnight. The pooping finally ceased Thursday afternoon… It seems like most people either puke excessively or poop excessively, or a little of both. The best part of it all- I have lost 6 pounds in 2 days and my fart has no smell… 🙂

  40. Heather says:

And the bug continues…. Child’s daycare is eat up with it!

  41. Diana says:

My son started with the ” bug” back in January. With in 24 hours one by one it went through my whole family. As suck as I was I went through the whole house and bleached everything and Lysoled . With in a week we all got it back. Repeated my cleaning procedure throw out all tooth brushes. And we got better. It did not last as long this time. Then two weeks after that we all got it again but not at the same time and all different . My boys always had it a little bit worse than my husband and I. Repeat cleaning and throwing out tooth brushes again. Now we are at the end of February. We still get the occasional brush with the bug. Parents nothing to much buty boys I feel like its once a week that they can’t go to school or once every other week. The school had told me this morning when I called my son out that the school can not get rid of it. I need to find a way to keep this stomach bug out of my house! It’s the end of march! Help!!!

  44. S Boston says:

Add BAKING SODA, about 1/2 teaspoon to your food. Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate will clear up the stomach bug. Will help keep you clear, and even clears up IBS, gas and other digestive issues. Look up Baking Soda on the internet for info on Baking Soda

  45. Danielle Rossi says:

I think some of the early signs that you may be getting a stomach bug are the following:

    – lingering headache, when you don’t normally get headaches
    – loss of appetite
    – if you do eat something, your gag reflex plays up and you sort of gag on the food or even the drink
    – stomach making noises, although this happens a lot when you are not getting a bug
    – feeling ‘off’, weak, rough
    – the idea of food, any food, makes you queasy or even the sight of it, even if it’s an advert on telly it’s too much to watch, food that normally looks good looks awful
    – feeling chilled or sweating for no apparent reason
    – you sort of throw up spit in your mouth without actually being sick, and it keeps happening
    – your stomach churns
    – if simply moving your body makes you feel more nauseous, then very likely it’s a bug of some sort

certain places are high risk for bugs: crowded gym classes or any crowded classroom, long queues, busy shops where people are close together, any school or day care centre, and apparently cruise ships. also high risk is poor hygiene.
